Program Notes Tracy McDonnell Director, St. Camillus Multicultural Choir 1. Prelude: My Lord, What a Morning! USA: African American Spiritual ARR. TRACY McDONNELL The melody for this traditional spiritual was adapted by Spanish composer Cesáreo Gabaráin in 1979 under the title Juntos Como Hermanos (Together Like Brothers and Sisters), and has since become one of the most popular liturgical songs of the Latin American Church, along with his much-beloved "Pescador de Hombres." Here at St. Camillus, where Spanish has become the majority language in recent years, this cross-cultural aspect seemed a fitting opening for us as we continue to strive for the grace of unity amidst the challenge – and tremendous gift – of diversity. Danke schön to flutist Andrea Heilmann -- du bist ein Schatz! USA: African American Spiritual ARR. RODERICK BELL Upon first hearing this song sung by our dynamic Gospel Choir under the inspired direction of Henry Herrera, I was immediately taken with its energy and vitality. Time spent watching Henry’s hands as he directed from the keyboard was well-rewarded! Henry learned the basic arrangement from Roderick Bell, which we later adapted with an SATB refrain. Special thanks to our gifted soloist, Terri Thompson. South Africa: Traditional ARR. TRACY McDONNELL This was a great example of cross-cultural oral tradition. Alan Smith, an Episcopalian seminarian and teaching colleague, returned in the spring of 1999 bearing gifts from South Africa: several vibrant songs including this exciting polyrhythmic setting which we eventually arranged for SATB choir. The simple but powerful text from the Xhosa tribe translates: You hold the key; open the door and walk through. Alan, wherever you are now, we thank you. Your gift has blessed us many times over.
